Primary Health Care

Picture
Although there is a hospital in Kapedo first established by the missionaries who came here long ago, there are many challenges.  John, the lab tech, created a list of a number of needs for the laboratory.  There are needs for mattresses, linen, running water, medicines, a functioning ambulance, etc.
On the other hand, the Pokots don't come to the clinic at all other than in a dire emergency because of the conflict.  They are afraid that they will be mistreated.  When one of them has a bad outcome after waiting until their medical problem is a disaster, they blame the Turkanas for mistreating them.  Having a Pokot working with the Turkanas who understands the culture and language is critical to opening the door for the tribes to be treated at one facility.
Additionally, starting an outreach clinic that provides care to the Pokots locally at Akoret will be a major step toward regaining trust.  Medicines and healthcare will be provided at a multipurpose shelter on a regular basis by the healthcare providers from Kapedo.  The shelter will serve as a clinic, an adult education center, and on weekends, as a worship center.
