Pokot Turkana Peace Initiative

Welcome to our new website.  We invite you to join us on a journey beyond belief to an area of northern Kenya near a town called Kapedo.  Here we will be restoring peace between two warring tribes with your help.  We visited Kapedo (Turkanas) and nearby Akoret (Pokots) in late 2012 in order to understand the challenges between the two tribes and to see what barriers stood between the present conflict and the way to peace.  What we discovered was both astounding and hopeful.  We are hoping that you will join us in our efforts to bring reconciliation between the Pokot and Turkana tribes who have been fighting with each other over limited resources in their desert home.

The Pokots have essentially all of the cattle, goats and pasture, but they lack adequate water and they lack access to education, spiritual care and healthcare because of the conflict.  The Turkanas have the hospital and the schools and churches, but they have no goats, cows or pasture, and they cannot travel outside of town due to hostilities with the Pokots.  Each tribe has what the other tribe desperately needs.

The number one priority for the Pokots is water, followed by healthcare, education and spiritual teaching.  The number one priority for the Turkanas is building an shelter for the orphans of the conflict, followed by water development and income generation.  They need their animals and pasture back, and freedom to travel safely.  Both groups know that any of our development investments will be tied to peace.  They know that we will work with those who are committed to the peace process.

We have discovered committed people on both sides of the conflict who will lead us to peace.  Their stories are heartfelt and compelling.  Come with us, discover who these people are, hear their stories and find out how you can help us to develop peace.
